The New Server is Built - Almost Ready

Post by BaronVonRotterdam » Wed Dec 03, 2014 10:05 pm

Hey Guys,

So I got all the parts in for the new server yesterday and pretty much finished wiring it and assembling it today. The only thing I am waiting for is a CPU Fan/Heatsink to come in the mail tomorrow (apparently Intel is getting cheap and doesn't include one anymore). This server should last us for the next 4-6 years hopefully. So here are the specifications:

Case: Corsair Carbide Air 540
Cooling Fans: 3x Corsair AF140L 140mm
RAID 1 Data Drive: 2x 1TB Sata III 6GB/s
Mother Board: - ASUS Sabertooth X79 (8 RAM DIMMS)
RAID 1 OS SSD: 2x 480GB SATA III 6GB/s
Power Supply: 860 W ATX 12V / EPS 12V - Fully Modular
Processor: i7 - 4930k- 6 Core
RAM: 16GB DDR3 - 1600 (2x8GB)
Optical: DVD/RW
Heatsink: Arctic Alpine 20

So the next step is to migrate all of the data from the old server to the new server. We will be doing this on Saturday. Depending on how quick things go we will hopefully be done by EOD Monday. If that goes well I will ship out the server on Tuesday and it should be to Michigan by Friday. I will be starting development on Patch 180 after the 15th of December when my finals are done. However on Friday the 12th both the Development and Production servers will be back up and running.

Thank you all for your patience during this down time. As I mentioned in the last announcement I ended up purchasing the server myself because joey is going through severe financial hardship. Joey has a lawsuit open against his job and has been on unpaid medical leave for the last month and will be on leave until the 22nd. This has caused undue financial hardship on him, along with the current $16,000 he has had to pay to his lawyers. Joey will hear this Friday whether or not he is getting fired from his job. We are hoping that he does get fired so that he gets more money for his lawsuit. Plus, he'll be making unemployment and will have an income again. He is estimating the lawsuit to be decided in 4-6 months. In the meantime joey and I send our thanks to all of those who have donated. At least five people have donated and we have raised at least $200, one generous person sent us $100 of that. Thank you to whoever you were for your extreme generosity. That money will be used to pay the monthly server hosting bill for a couple of months. In the event that joey doesn't get unemployment I have already agreed to pay the bill for the server so we can keep our community alive. However, I am a full time college student working a $10 an hour part time job making on average $200 a week so if this comes to pass any donations will be greatly appreciated.

As always I will keep you guys posted with any updates, stay tuned.

Hi

Not bad on the budget you had, not bad at all.... I am curious as to the ssd's you are using.. haven't kept up with the tech on these at the desktop level... just curious. As for intel not including a fan on these items, the 2011 socket didn't get any because it is a performance chip, and as such should be used with an aftermarket fan, instead of including a pittance of a fan intel opted to let the builder use a higher performance item.... I understand intel was planning on including liquid based systems at one point, but decided not to... mainly because trying to include a liquid in a server room environment would be frowned on by the rooms owners... can't be having systems springing a leak and having a potential hazmat situation in a data center. though, if the aisles are configured for proper hot/cold , one could use a passive cool system (for the most part, data rooms are designed hot cold, but some colo's don't bother with this in that type of situation, too many variables to overcome)...
Thanks for the update ,and thanks for the contribution. Still haven't won the lottery, otherwise I would be putting up a proliant 3xx gen 9 - not sure about the ddr4 yet, but considering it has taken this long for a step in mem tech, it should be ok.. but otherwise expensive considering 1st gen chips... hanging on to see how well they perform in servers before I go the 2011-3 sock route..... anyway.. gd'evening

I was going to get a LGA2011v3 mobo until I saw how overpriced and underpowered the DDR4 is.

So apparently the 3TB was DOA. It was overkill anyway so I setup a RMA for it and purchased 2x 1TB WD Red Hd's for raid 1. 1TB is more than enough anyhow since we don't host video or anything like that. Those drives should be coming in Monday. So at the moment we are sill on schedule.

normally this should be posted in spam forum, but due to current occasion
i think it fits better here....

murphys law: what can go wrong will go wrong,

or,

the story why having an own server is so expensieve and
why it often needs so much time till its running....

...here is the story:

after 2 weeks sweating blood and water paintball finally finished
building a new server.

cost: 1800$

he decided the fastest and cheapest way for "shipment",

(cost: 5$)

but like you can see it was a great error....

Image

luckily paintball made a transport insurance and after 3 weeks
he got money back from the insurance company and started rebuilt
another new server. now knowing how it works he only needed 10 days
to built it.

after finishing it he asked a low cost container transport company how
much renting a container and shipment is, transport insurance included.

cost: 150$

well...

Image

...they said the containerdoor wasnt locked and it opend when crashed
and the package was falling down and another container totally crushed it.
luckily again transport insurance payed back the money after 1 week...

rebuilding again by paintball...this time he spent 24/7 and it was done
in 7 days.

he asked big company for regular container shipment.

cost: 527,27$ (only renting and shipment)

nope!

Cost: 783,79$ (with transport insurance... sigh...)

after 3 weeks...ship had some trouble....

Image

the containers all sunk.

Image

after 2 month divers salvaged the wreckage, but the server again was
destroyed....

the insurance company wont pay because they said this was
caused by force of nature.
paintballs lawyer filed a lawsuit against the insurance company.

after 6 month he won....

(cost: 87.264,12$)

even with having the money back again, paintball was a little bored
and not really in the mood to start to built the new server
hopefully for the last time...

after another month it was finally done.

to make sure really nothing happens again to the server on its way,
paintball choosed the ultimate very last option:

I haven't updated the BIOS yet but I know the hard drive wasn't having a software problem. When it started it up it would repeatedly making a clicking sound and then it disappeared from Windows. I plugged the hard drive into my personal computer and it had the same problem.

LMAO Amy that was brilliant!! After this hard drive I think the defect days are over. Thankfully no freight shipping is involved!
