notes on intel's E6600

Post by Quester115 » Tue Oct 30, 2007 12:25 am

This gets put here because well this really isn't the comunity that cares about stuff like this and yeah it feels like another one of those "hey look at me posts" but ohh well...

Dual Core's built on the Core2 Conroe architecture
I'm continually amazed at the potential that this chip shows. been curious as to how far i can push this thing the past few days, so i tried.
after about 3 days 2-4 hours each I believe to have hit the peak for this system.

the rig consists of a a MSI-P6N-SLI-FI mainboard housing nVidia's 650i chipset.
although the interwebs say the 680i can reach higher speeds the lower model 650i can still hold up pretty well.
and 2GB ram from the Corsair Dominator series rated at 4-4-4-12 800Mhz

at the end of my spree of pushing the pedal all the way to the floor the highest stable overclock came in at a FSB of 1566Mhz
which lasted for a whole 15min under a full load
brought it down a tad and it is currently running stable at 1533Mhz (383 x 4)
which has been running for 6+ hours on a full load
pushing my little chip rated at 2.4Ghz to 3.45Ghz
the ram is currently clocked 1:1 at 766Mhz
all air cooled running at 50C reported by TAT

so thats
E6600 @ 3.5Ghz
2GB Ram @ 766Mhz 4-4-4-12
8800GTS @ core:648 shader:1512 ram:972

and the quester is happy :) just ran 3DMark 06 while writing this
SM2.0 - 4473
HDR/SM3.0 - 4483
CPU - 2714
composite: 10200
up from the standard clocks: 7777

investing soon in a 680i mainboard (any suggestion on a manufacturer?)
and a ver' nice Xeon Quad Core X3220
and we'll see what this next promising rig will handle ... in mid december when i get the money lol

Thanks for the post, I have recently been looking at the E6600. It has a pretty sweet price range for the performance it seems to have. Plus with the overclocking you said you did on it, well it seems like it can really take a beating.

Good Post!!!

nice, thats the board i was looking at too.
and Cha-Chi if your going to be overclocking go with a 680i board. I only topped out at 1533 because of restrictions on my 650i
full load still stable up time: 10hr and counting :)
ohh and as far as "real life" results go if you aren't one for 3Dmarks
I run lucas-lehmer prime tests to put on that full load (and help out gimps, see other posts)
and on the two current tests (one on each core) the seconds per iteration dropped from .079 on a standard clock to .061 on the overclock the other dropped from .037 to .028. which is not that bad considering it saves a week or two of computing for each test.
