Analog signals going away, tv problems!

Post by Scion » Wed Jan 02, 2008 6:06 am

Just now I was on MSN.com and saw something that I think might surprise quite a few of you and just wanted to let some of you have a heads up if you didn't know.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22401907/wi ... ?gt1=10841

Please note that you might not have to toss your tv away but instead will have to get some sort of box that will pick up the digital signal instead.

Ultra old-school news.. The only people who will be affect ed are people who are using bunny-ears antenna and still rely on VHF-UHF to recieve their TV broadcasts..

In February 2009, as part of the transition from analog to digital over-the-air broadcast of television, the spectrum from 698MHz to 806MHz (UHF channels 52-69) will no longer be used for TV broadcasting. The FCC has scheduled Auction 73 for some of the newly-available spectrum to be held in January 2008. [2] Google and other companies are bidding, probably to use UHF to carry wireless internet signals.

So those folks who have those OLD UHF-VHF televisions are SoL also. Hence, the FCC is now giving out vouchers to everyone in the US who wants it so they can get a discount for now being forced to buy CableTV-ready televisions with the appropriate built-in tuners. I wonder how much bandwidth we'll free up once we get rid of those frequencies..

OnStar's little button won't work so thats a few people who actually might need to use it won't get any effect, some cell phones and alarms won't work so thats going to be a problem if there is an emergency for those people who have those, and its estimate that there are 30 million tv's like this so you might be able to imagine how many tv's may be tossed out with lead contained insided that will cause nothing but problems.
