Well this can get interesting..

What kind of mic is it? Are you running any other program the uses your mic?

And the big one. Do you have voice chat set up in the audio menu in ut and have a key set to open your mic? UT uses a "Push to Talk" system, in other words you can't just start talking, you need to hold down a key (Default is f) and speak, then release the key when your done

Hope that helps

Like mad set. Is it set up in UT. Feel weird but. Test your mic in Windows. By default its muted also in windows. When your in UT. Go to settings and check Audio. Buttom Right is voice chat. Click that and it should Work.

These are the proper voice chat settings for UT 2004.

In settings/audio lower right box make sure Voice chat is X'd

Click the configure button

Voice chat volume all the way up (you can adjust this later)

Autojoin all channels (each one X'd)

Internet quality on better

NEXT

In settings/input/configure controls

Scroll down until you get to the communications section

PAY ATTENTION TO THIS PART

Toggle public channel and Toggle team channel are the only 2 actions that need to have a key assigned.

DO NOT ASSIGN A KEY TO speak in local channel or speak in team channel

That should set you up as far as UT 2004 is concerned.

its a default to your "F" key. but you can use whatever you want. I use a key on the side on my mouse.

NO The "speak in team/public channel" options don't do a damn thing.

But you do hold the key to "toggle" the channels when you speak.

For example if you assign the P key to toggle public channel, you must hold the P key in order to be heard.
