And u, Von, want to kill the planet.

If I have understood your post, you're not very conducive to reducing emissions of CO2 (America's Climate Security Act of 2007), because six tired that the U.S. economy suffers from what you term limits.
If you do not reduce emissions of CO2, phenomena like Katrina will be increasingly frequent, and you can not think of the thing, thinking only to your Country.
Here is the entire planet, the greenhouse effect involves the entire planet.
To tell our economy Italian, for some years is always worse. For energy at example, we depend a lot to other countries, up to 70%, in fact the Government has now decided to switch to nuclear third, or (perhaps fourth) generation, after 80 years in the Italians expressed against nuclear energy.
I am in favour of diversification that we need to diversify energy sources by eliminating the production of reducing CO2, and a good thing they're studying by you ( http://www.oceanpowertechnologies.com), and in other Countries, for example, is to derive energy from the waves, and from the currents of oceans.
Pity that the recent major economies and those emerging China head, do not want it
The prosperity is not everything, you can also live saving, and refraining from some things.

Paint in Italy gasoline costs: $ 8.81 per gallon and the average salary is 1000-1200€ net, taxes are at 43% for individuals and almost 70 for companies ...., an apartment normal , in rent is about 600 € etc. etc.)

(We use the liter as the unit of measurement here and petrol costs € 1.51 per litre.
€ 1 = $ 1.54 or 1$ = 0,649€
1 liter = 0,262 gallons or 1 gallon = 3.79 liters.)

This is a tough situation, especially since a lot of our political powers on both sides of the isle (democrats and republicans) are almost always in Big Business' pocket.

The democrats may argue not to drill here because it will cause harm to the surrounding environment, but the republicans argue that alternative fuels are inefficient, too expensive to invest in right now, and may even say that the mere development of these alternative fuels may actually output MORE pollution.

I don't trust the energy companies AT ALL to lower their prices once we find cheaper fuels until their profits are harmed. If people continue paying for energy even at the high price available, they won't lower prices at all.

I too believe that diversifying energy sources is where the real impact to emissions will be. Tidal energy truly is awesome and I would like to see more of that being built. Also Solar (photo-voltaic and thermal) make very good distributed systems. Over here (U.S) I saw a lot of investment interest around 06/07 and i hope that that continues.

For the economy the best thing that could happen is the use use of these newer electrical generation systems, and to start limiting fossil fuel burning. "High" prices for oil based energy may just be the thing to spark a movement. I've already seen more demand for electric/hybrid transportation than ever before, and I think that this will only grow.

I've even changed majors from CS to engineering to see if I can do 'something' with energy (ok, not the real reason, but it makes it look like I'm doing something lol)

If you ask me, we should be paying at least $10 per gallon for gasoline... doing that would bring about a great number of benefits:

1) Less traffic congestion in America, billions of dollars per day are lost due to gridlock -- that's money spent idling and burning fuel, lower worker productivity, etc.

2) Fewer auto-related accidents traffic accidents are the number one cause of death for people between the ages of 5 and 27 in the U.S. That is a seriously f'ed-up stat. Fewer cars on the road will mean more lives saved, which also leads to...

3) Less air pollution instances of respiratory illness will drop due to fewer auto emissions. This affects young children much more adversely, but it affects adults as well

4) A generally healthier society Instead of hopping in to the SUV to drive 4 blocks to the local convenience store, someone will be more likely to walk, run, or bike there. Americas declining health is due in large part to the automobile.

$10/gallon gasoline would have some adverse affects as well, I'm certain, but none that I don't think we can't learn to live with. Some people rely on their cars for their livelihood, and maybe the best thing to do in that case is pass the cost on... or maybe tax deductions for the self employed and small business that rely heavily on gasoline. The larger point is, cheap gasoline is a privilege that we really can't afford, and we can learn to do without.

You have got to be kidding...........

I think you need to be looking out for this new investigation on the oil investors........this might do something (can we say "insider" trading).

This global warming crap is just that.....CRAP.........We need to drill more, but the oil companies need to invest in more production.......all they're thinking about right now is how high their damn profit margin is. Let's open drilling in Alaska so we don't rely on outside sources. To hell with OPEC.

Then we can all drive Hemi Challengers......"YEAH BABY !!!!!"

Whatever, man... I can't stand the greedy oil companies at all, but just looking at the numbers and comparing them over the past 30 years, you won't see any significant change in the margins that the oil comapnies have taken in. Despite the appearances, the oil companies are not price gouging. The fact is, more people are driving now -- trucks and SUV's in particular -- than ever before in history (both in the US and other countries, especially China and India) and oil production is going down (read up on "peak oil" to understand why) -- in other words, demand has gone up dramatically, and supply is going down. That can only lead to a rise in prices -- basic market dynamics. Throw in the extremely weak Dollar which buys much less oil than in previous years (oil is priced in dollars per barrel, by the way), and there is no way to keep prices down. Drilling in Alaska will be a drop in the bucket compared to our oil consumption; it won't change a thing. Never mind that our number 1 foreign oil supplier isn't anywhere near the middle east -- that oil is imported from Canada.

But with so many selfish and unscrupulous folks who think they have a god given right to burn oil with impunity and without consequences, I don't expect anything will change significantly, not until the market drive gas prices here up to $10+ per gallon, and Manhattan and Miami are deeply submerged underwater. Enjoy your hemi while you can.
