A Few Things to Know About Carball

Post by KnaveSkye » Thu Jul 12, 2007 1:18 pm

Most of the basic controls have been covered, though im not sure if they were clear(they can be found further down on this topic). Using the shift key will charge a jump meter, pressing left or right while it is charged will put a certain amount of spin on your jump. Also while in mid air you can use left or right to turn but with less response so a fully charged left spin cannot be undone by holding right after you jump. Shift tilts you down and space tilts you up, so if you do a quickflip and hold space, you will continue to flip in the same direction, allowing you to land on your wheels instead of your hood.

About wall climbing: This is a bit tricky to really get good at, and once you have it down, you have to learn to wall turn. A wall climb happens when you jump at a wall and hold space so that your car becomes vertical, as soon as all 4 wheels are on the wall, hold Shift again and it should latch to the wall, and will stay on as long as you hold it. You can drive foward and it will go foward if it is straight up. If you are sideways, pressing forward will actually cause you to move foward and down a bit. By perfecting the small taps of forward you can actually do a controlled turn driving down a wall. As for turning when you are facing upward there are 2 options. One is if you have a very small correction to make, try using a quickflip while moving forward up the wall, and it will straighten you out, and you can also use this technique to gain alot of speed by rapidly pressing quickflip while going up the wall. I use my mouse wheel down for quickflips, it works well for me, and allows for very rapid quickflips. The second method for making sharper turns on the wall is to do a jump while on the wall. Say you are facing right and need to face straight up. What you would do is since you are already holding down the jump button(shift), hold the left button for a moment to charge a left spin, release jump long enough to see some rotation, and start holding jump again to relatch to the wall. This takes practice but once you get the hang of it, racing 1 becomes very easy(well...alot more easy) just be careful cause you will move up a bit when you do this, and you can quickly run out of wall and be screwed by losing your grip on the top ledge.

The Super Flip: Ok, i heard you try to explain this, and there is one aspect that i see missing. You tell them to get a good speed and then do a quickflip....this is good, but its not the super flip. Granted, the faster you are going the better this works...but i can jump on top of the wall in zig with only a small start using this trick. The key is to charge a normal jump, and right as you let go to jump, do a quickflip...this will really get you up there. Great for reaching high places in a hurry without a boost. Also very ammusing when performing a move i like the call the flying death bomb. Basically you need a rocket and good timing. This puts you pretty high in the air, so as you fly over someone you shoot them with the rocket and continue flying to safety. Having the headlights on help to aim this one.

Pocket Rocket: For those who cant seem to get the ball in the air, this works pretty well. All it takes is an aimed shot at the ground right next to the ball. Im not very good at this, and i prefer the boost scoop method anyways, but the guided version(alt fire) works best for this.

Boost Scoop: This was already described but ill explain it as well. From my own practice, the vehicle makes a difference here. I used to use a Bullit and it didnt work for me, then i switched to the Spectre and was good to go. For a simple practice of this, have a stationary ball and a boost. Get very close to the ball, but not touching it.Charge your jump about half way and release, then hold jump in mid air to tilt your nose down a little bit. When your nose is pointed between the ball and the ground, activate the boost in the air, and then when you hit the ground perform a quickflip as fast as possible(this is where being able to just scroll down my mouse wheel helps alot) if you did it right, the ball will fly through the air a bit....sometimes further than others, but again, it comes with practice.

The Shield: This is more useful then alot of you probably realize. If you get right up on the ball and activate this, it launches it pretty well. This can be great for when you "appear to lose control of the ball" and pull up along side it and its gonna go wide of the goal, then you activate this and it nudges back in front of the goal. Its usually goes in a direction relative to your vehicle...so its pretty easy to control.

Im not a big fan of Goo or mines(except for the random sticky on someones hood, good times). Im still not great with air control and boosts, so i cant adivise you how to use multiple boosts to practically run the ball in midair, just be aware the you can tilt your vehicle up and then boost to get air, and then use combination of shift and space and the left/right arrows to change your angle and boost a different dirrection(vital to learn if you ever want to beat funhouse 2).

Thats all the tricks i can think of right now, hope it helps a little bit.

Ah yes the mines i forgot them lol

Yes the air control and flying with speed booster is actually a lil hard again with thas why i stay ont he ground alot lol

The key here though is to always have fun (Duh)
and after u have learned what the controls are and how they work
Test the controls test the power ups play around
take a CB match and jus practice these controls find out what works for you

Moving this useful info to this post

Well I will try to explain and cover Carball best i can

Ok well lets start with movement

Me I use Arrow Keys which would be WASD or whatever you have set your movement up as

Anyways
Up arrow/W - Forward/Gas - Makes you go forward

Left Arrow/A - Left Turn - Turns your wheels to the left

Right Arrow/D - Right Turn - Turns Wheels to the right

Down Arrow/S - Brake/Reverse - Hold this key for your regular brake or to go into reverse

For mouse

Mouse movement is for looking around straighting out camera angle basically your look utensil

Left Mouse Key - Primary Fire - Fires primary mode on pickups (Pocket Rockets/ Goo Pile / Speed boost

Right Mouse key - For me its Emergency Brake - Use this to make sudden stops and or spin around a lil faster when turning

Middle Mouse Wheel Button - Alt Fire - Fires Alternate Fire of a pickup (Pocket Rocket / Goo Pile /Speed )

Mouse Wheel Roller - This is pretty useful For me it rolls my camera view in closer or out farther which I constantley change depending on where I am in the field

To switch between powerups its [ ] same as Invasion unless you changed it

Ok Now Ill try to cover sum of the special stuff I only know and use a lil of it but I will try

Small Jumps - Shift key or sum people have space bar - If you press and hold this key you should notice a lil power bar at the bottom of your screen powering up. When its full let go and you will jump straight up. If you are turning at the same time as u jump your car will do a spin in the air
If you jump up and then click jump again you will tilt forward and if you hit reverse you will tilt backwards making your car vertical

Also with this key you can do alot of special tricks
Example - Pick up a Speed booster chase down the ball get right behind it press that key and let it power up for maybe a second jump then hit that button again and you will be poised to chip the ball like a pool stick hitting under the ball.

To climb walls - drive towards the wall power up your jump key hit reverse so you lean back when u hit the wall with your tires hit and hold the jump key and you will stick to the wall although YOU CANNOT TURN while doing this whichever way you are heading is the way you are going

GIANT JUMP - You have to set a keybind for this to work
Set input "X" CBQUICKFLIP (X being whatever you choose)
This helps for when the ball is bouncing in the beginning of the match unless you are a CB pro then it comes in handy

Drive as fast as u can once your moving at a good speed tap that button and you will do a giant backflip in the air. Once you get that down then you add things to it like a speed booster after you jump

I only use quickflip for the beginning really

Alot fo the jumps and special moves all have to do with the combination of the shift/spacebar and cbqucickflip if you can understand these 2 manuevers seperatley that is a real good start then you jus add to it making your own combos really

Live and learn really

POWERUPS

Speed Booster Primary Fire gives you a speed boost
Alt fire Gives you a super Jump

Goo Pile Primary Fire Releases a goo pile right behind you for them pesky tail gaters
Alt Fire will let you charge the goo and shoot it forward depending on how much of a charge you give it

Repulse field Primary Fire Creates a Rubber like Bubble around you bouncing almost anything off and away

Pocket Rocket Primary shoots a rocket in a straight line
Alt Fire lets you control how far and where you want it to go lil difficult to control

Sticky Mines - Primary Fire drops a mine right behind your car again for the pesky tail gaters Alt Fire throws the mine forward about a distance of 2 cars in front of you and sticks to a car or the ball and will stick until you hit the alt fire button again

Nuke Bomb Well ima let you figure this 1 out lol

The Gold wrenches laying all over the field those give you health a nd repair your car as you run them over

There is alot of tricks you can do but you have to learn the jumps to do alot of em . Lol im only good at maps with the goal ont he ground goals in the air or the tennis map are my weaknesses the jumps are difficult i know

I hope I didnt forget anything
There prolly are more keybinds and tricks but thas all i know or use

Another thing the Ball has the characteristics of a real ball It moves and bounces like it is air filled so remeber when your running towards a wall hit it from a angle and that will send it flying whichever way you are angled same with cars ram the ball into someone sideways to shoot it down the field
Carball is Soccer with cars the Object is to get the ball into the goal of the opposing team and guard your own goal .
Gets addictive after time I startwed jus like everyone else hated carball never wanted to play but im addicted now carball is kick ass

Heh, don't forget the invisible item that turns a person mostly invisible (you can still be seen, just not as easily and not what team you are on).
Sometimes a crazy move is the best move.

So i was messing around with single player carball and I noticed that one of the powerups works a little differently than it does online. I wondered if anyone else has ever tried single player( yah, the bots are retarded but its more for practicing ball control). The Boost powerup is the one im refering to. You can litteraly do like 3 loops in the air with it if you hold down space or shift, it not only lasts longer but will allow you to change dirrections the entire duration of it. This is opposed to online where once you fire it, you get a one time push in the dirrection you were facing when you fired it off

What I mean is that i launch UT2k4, Go to instant action, Carball, its version 2.7(the latest from the carball site) and i dont make any alterations to any kind of setting. The boost just lasts alot longer for some reason, I can just about fly from one goal to the other in Spaced3, or like i said, the thrust last long enough to do barrel rolls in the sky. Another example is that i can clear the jump on Racing 2 that gives you 3 boosts with just one, and it actually leaves me with one after i land. Just wonderign why without changing any settings it is soo much different than when i play online at any carball server or joeyz. I actually think it might be a bit more fun iif it worked that way online, but the way it is now is more of a challenge. If any of you got a spare moment, try it on instant action and see if it does the same thing.
