That's the thing to remember - unlike the '70s gas crisis, where we were running out of gas, people carpooled and reduced traffic, the government stepped in to reduce the maximum speed limit, manufacturers nearly went broke with selling the Big Cars before trying more efficient models...

...today, there has been NO CHANGE in the traffic patterns, or usage of cars! At least, for the most part. There is plenty of gas! The price gouging is coming from OPEC, and as much as a petition sounds like a good idea, OPEC just laughs. The price isn't fueled by oil company greed, it's necessary to recoup the price of buying oil. If we were to start drilling our own, they don't do it for free, we will still be paying the high price!

As long as us, the consumers, don't change our driving and spending habits, we will still keep paying whatever the price is. Crying about means nothing.

As far as gas guzzlers, Kung Fu - yes, there are many gas guzzlers. I think the "all SUVs are gas guzzlers" is a lame argument - look at their gas mileage compared to a lot of cars, trucks, and smaller vehicles, and I don't think there's much difference. Did you know, for instance, corvettes and mustangs can get nearly 30 mpg? It doesn't make sense, but it's true! There was a recent study done by some company, I forget which, in that the most fuel efficient vehicle was a jeep Wrangler. at 16 mpg! Why? because of the costs involved in making the car, and its maintenance record, and longevity of the car. You pay more gas, but you have a vehicle you don't have to replace nearly as often. That's another factor, as well, the environmental costs in making cars.

Aah yes, that's what I forgot to mention. OPEC. |-( Its difficult to know why exactly are they suddenly spiking oil. A lot of people blame the war, and American opinion vs. the world, greed, or that oil is running low in that region-- Perhaps probably due to China suddenly chugging hard at all that stuff.

We really do need to build more refineries. The ones we have now are operating in over drive and can't keep up. A few more refineries and a few more nuke plants and the cost of gasoline will drop back down to under $3 a gallon.

I do think that folks driving suv's just as a status symbol are retarded, but hey it's their right to be retarded isn't it?

LoL you think they get bad gas mileage...my truck gets 12-16mpg if I'm lucky :D

Maybe you like a government to tell you what to drive, when to drive, how to drive or how to live, but not me. Face it......It's a resource and we will use it.
censored no I wouldn't. Imagine everyone in the the now United States of Socialism driving boring, grey expression-neutral cars, dressed in the grey National Uniform? Y'all can drive all the cars you wanna drive. I'm just advocating my own little views because myself, I don't care about large cars, and if it was my own personal choice, I'd go with something as fuel-efficient as possible. Hell, if hydrogen-cell becomes much cheaper, that would be a much better route. If you want to drive a monster-truck with a pick-up chassis, then by all means..!

Why is it that anyone who's in the far-right view the slightest opposition to their views a OMG FAR LEFT COMMIE ?
By the way, that's why the first settlers broke away from England and came to this land we now call United States of America........so we can and should live free.
A lack of religious tolerance, repression, a desire of dissent.. Quite a number of reasons why people left England, events leading to the revolution and the birth of this country. Dissent is one of my favorite traits.. I align with neither side of the isle, agree with bits of either side, and I'd easily tell the next Democratic president to go censored themselves just as quickly as I'd do to anyone in the right.

Another thing I forgot to mention!!! Nuclearnuclearnuclearnuclearnuclear!!

I don't even think we have ANY nuclear plants at all, and we need more! The public needs to be educated that the days of Chernobyl and 3-Mile Island are all ancient history, and many technological advancements have been made to prevent such things, and to stop associating "nuclear" with "mushroom cloud" =P

The biggest drawback to nuclear plants is what to do with the old rods that are used up.

If we can figure that out we'd be set as far as energy production goes. Nuclear plants are the most efficient way to produce electricity. They are also very safe and quite friendly to the planet (aside of the spent fuel rods).

The moon sounds like a great place to dump those rods......

Or better yet, the sun, because we'll eventually populate the moon. We already have 1 satellite headed to the sun, why not a "garbage scow" satellite with spent rods?
I will consistently sacrifice political correctness for an attempt at humor. If ya can't deal, then ya need ta stop being ign'ant.

Could be that most people / the government are unconvinced/uninterested in putting taxes in space programs. :(
