Tech Support Please!

OK a buddy of mine is having an issue I encountered myself a few months back. I was able to research online and find the answer then, but now that I know what caused it I think I might be refining my searches too much to find it again... dangit. Anyhow, here's what's going on:

The CD/DVD drive is being recognized by XP - you can see the drive/letter in "My Computer"

However, the system will not recognize when ANY media is inserted into the drive. We've tried multiple types/brands (of CD, DVD & audio) but nothing recognizes.

There have been *NO* hardware changes whatsoever. And the drive/computer is barely a year old, so the chances that the drive has wonked out.

Now as I said I encountered this myself before, and to resolve it I had to do something with my registry involving my virtual drives/software that I had installed. Unfortunately just uninstalling the software won't work, the registry has the virtual drives set up and needs them removed somehow.

Unfortunately, I cannot remember or find the exact information in the registry that needs changed.

If anyone is familiar with this scenario, please help!

Also, I should have the computer in my possession on Saturday, March 31st, so any input I can get by then would be greatly appreciated!

I have had that same issue once before myself...but the cause of it was how the drives were configured as master/slave drives with the drive jumpers. It would show the cd drive, but nothing would run in it, nor could you view any of the content of the cd.

Plus...drives aren't that horribly expensive...so, if that happened to and it was less than an year old..I'd check the manufacturers warranty period and coverage. If it's past a year and the warranty no longer applies, and the company basically tells you "oh well" I'd let them know that I'd be doing my business with another company from now on.

Hi Beast

I had this problem a few months ago, and the way i fixed it was to turn the pc off then open the side and take the ribbon cable off the drive, re-boot the pc and let windows load up then click out of windows and shut down, turn the pc off and re-fit the ribbon cable and load back into windows (my drive was there at this point and it read from the the media), now this may work for your pc, so maybe give it a try mate and best of luck hope you sort the problem.

Before I assume anything, have you/your friend tried the following?

1. Uninstall the drive and drivers and re-instalilng?

2. Updated the drivers?

3. Remove the case and unplug the problem drive. Boot up. Shut down. Plug in problem drive. Boot up.

3.1 Check the jumper pin settings on the 2 drives on the same ribbon cable just to be sure they are set properly. Best option is to put them on "cable select".

4. Remove problem drive from computer and clean the lense with a 100% cotton cloth. Very little pressure and a drop of windex is all you need.

First, what do you mean by "windows xp doesnt' recognize media"? Do you mean it doesn't see it at all? Like if I put in "The best of whiny emo bands" and you look at the drive it doesn't show up and clicking on the drive will cause windows to say "please insert disc" or something to that extent? Or is just autoplay not working?

If xp can't see it at all, first thing I'd check is the cable. Although they are connected pretty snug, it's possible it got loose enough where xp can still see there's a drive there but can't read any data off of it. You can also do like a couple other people said and turn off computer, disconnect drive, restart computer. Go into device manager (right click "my computer" > properties >hardware >device manager) and look for any thing with question marks or red x's. Check under the dvd/cd-rom drive section specificially. Turn off computer, reconnect drive, start computer. go into device manager again and see if there's any question marks or X's.

If it's just autoplay, search for "tweak ui". It's powertoy for windows that lets you adjust a bunch of hidden settings, including auto-play. It is released by microsoft so you should be able to download it somewhere from there. I wouldn't trust something like www.tweak-ui-for-free-xxx-censored.com or anything.

reset bios its lost its luster no really the bios gets messed up too with all the off and ons of the poor abused mobo

Yup, My comp did the same thing to me a while back(never buying from Asrock again :vom: )
anyways
reverted my bios to a previous version since I was already running most current and cd worked again.
now i don't condone monkeying around with bios flashing unless you 'know' that thats the problem.
try uninstalling and reinstalling drivers messing around with ide slave/master settings etc as stated before
