upgrading teh pc

Post by Quester115 » Mon May 14, 2007 1:57 pm

alright got paid again
(though its barely enough to call it getting paid)

so since i have next semester paid off i've decided to add some junk to my computer

trying to decide between jumping from 2gb (1 x 1gb) to 3gb (2 x 1gb + 2x 2gb) with a pair of these
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820145176
-or-
switching out my nVidia 6800 with a 7950GT
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814143071

^-has an intel Core2 6600@333fsb and an msi-p6n-sli-FI mainboard

so coming from a p4 @3.4ghz w/ a 4000mx and 512mb ram this machine is already fast by my standards, but ... you know the feeling

so what do you think would be better to have? as i slowly get ready for UT2008 i mean UT3 ;)

Go with the 7950GT

Even from the 6800 to 7800, I have heard the speed difference is REMARKABLE.
I will consistently sacrifice political correctness for an attempt at humor. If ya can't deal, then ya need ta stop being ign'ant.

you could go with four of these if you wanted to
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820145034

It has better timing but it does require the 4 sticks. The Rebates makes it really worth it. I just got it. The timing is going to be high on all the 800 Series no matter what people say because its still new tech but its actaully faster because of the of the piece running at 800MHZ. No matter what they both are solid 800 pieces of memory

For your video card I would actaully just stay in the same price and grab a 8600 GtS. Yes you will lose 128 Bit M.I. but you will gain 600-700 Mhz on your clock speed and also 125-220 on your core clock for the same price. I would dive into the 8600 GTS. Or go the SLI route and do two 7600 for around $20.00 more.

Thats My Input.
Later all!

thanks ortega ... good sticks there, I like corsair very much since i've never had problems with them

going with the vid card now, pick the ram in a few weeks

have a pair of corsair (2x1gb) running 400mghz*2 2-3-3-12 in the machine now, and i would recommend since there still stable when overclocking the timings a tad
had a 'great' experience trying to overclock memory by upping the clock speed...
easiest route: don't try just by faster modules

I'll look into the specs of going dual on a lower card... or getting an 8600(probably this route),but most likely i may put it off until i can afford the 8800+

thanks all for the input

dun do it. one 8800GTS outperforms two 7900GTX in sli. it is definitely better to get one of the higher cards versus two of the lower.

hen maybe two 8800GT's lol yeah like that will happen
teh monies are not in good favor with me

my decision:
wait for next payment in 2 weeks
get 8800gts
wait another month:
upgrade ram to 4x 2gb

now ...just to wait, and work, and wait some more
