Ok I did a brief search through a couple of my favorites and found that I was indeed wrong. It's not against California law, it's against federal law.

http://www.usdoj.gov/criminal/optf/link ... guide.html

From the above link...
Whether a reasonable person would find that the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.
obscene = lewd: suggestive of or tending to moral looseness; "lewd whisperings of a dirty old man"; "an indecent gesture"; "obscene telephone calls"; "salacious limericks"

So removing the censors and allowing minors to participate in the forums very well could put Joey into some legal troubles.

I was moderating a music forum back in 2004 and it was shut down and the admin/founder was fined $5k in fines because he allowed minors on the site and had no word censors and allowed nudity (which I think carried more weight than the words alone...but still).

This was overturned two weeks ago - it was all over the major news sources then:
Software filters work much better than a 1998 federal law designed to keep pornography away from children on the Internet, a federal judge ruled Thursday in striking down the measure on free-speech grounds.

Senior U.S. District Judge Lowell Reed Jr. also said the Child Online Protection Act fails to address threats that have emerged since the law was written, including online predators on social-networking sites like News Corp.'s MySpace, because it targets only commercial Web publishers..
http://ibtimes.com/articles/20070322/in ... ocking.htm

though this specifically mentions pornography in the article, the law it is referring to is the same on you linked to Zombie.

One final note - why I am I seeing this thread twice?

The nudity part was put into more emphasis...

Either way, I still will state that the two major sites that I've been frequenting since 2000 are still up and running allowing no word censors.

Here is the story on this from MSNBC:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17736176/

and from CNN:

http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/internet/0 ... index.html

I wanted to provide the stories from the majorly accepted, reputable sources than the obscure link I posted earlier.

Yes, the focus is primarily on pornography, but also covers
access (to) "harmful" material.
again, this is the same law ZombieSlayer referred to in his post.

Sorry kids, but I don't think my constitutional right to free speech should be trampled just because your parents refuse to take responsibility to what you have access to online.

DON'T TREAD ON ME!

Man up and think for yourselves.
frankly, i fail to see how using 'curse' words shows a group mentality or ignorance. so kindly quit lumping all the common folk in with the rabble.
