Zero Tolerance

Post by Kung_fu_Grip » Fri Apr 27, 2007 10:38 pm

Sup All,

Back in the day when I first played this server, there was a zero tolerance rule for all the usual crap players can do. telefraging, cheating, spamming, abusive chat etc.

Is this still true today?

In the last couple of days I have heard players and an admin use racist and sexist chat and speech. Nobody commented on this during the game except me.

I really enjoy talking crap with everyone on the server, and it normally adds to my enjoyment of the game. But when I hear the N word (regardless how u spell it) or Fag being used to describe someone it makes me angry.

I am not naming anyone, this is no witch hunt, but I would appreciate Joey and the admins taking a hard line on all bigoted chat and speech.

I play CS:S on a server where players are warned and then kicked for bigoted comments, most players instantly stop and those that dont are removed. It makes a good environment for players of all ages.

I should point out that I am not referring to curse words, we all need to curse when we lose our UT goodies because a German with a wand spawns next to us.

What do u think?

Turkey,

I have to disagree with your statement that the N word is no longer a racist term. You are correct in that it is used frequently by some black individuals. But research and my own personal experience would argue that this is not true for the majority of black people. My wife’s family is from Africa, and I can assure you that they would not accept the N word as an acceptable word for black. "Black culture is not Hip-Hop videos" The majority of black people live outside of America and do not prescribe to the image of black culture portrayed on American television. I work in a university in southern USA, a university where until recently (7 years ago) some departments had never graduated a black masters or doctorate student, where white students were provided answers to tests and instructed not to reveal the answers to black students to ensure that black students could not pass and dropped out or failed their degrees. Institutionalized racism is everywhere, whether we want to admit it or not we all have preconceived opinions of people based on gender, race, sexuality, disability.
If you or anyone else reading this believes that the term 'cracker' is even remotely as powerful as the N word, and evokes a similar emotional response within an individual u are sadly mistaken. I am tired of hearing the term cracker being used by white people as an example of how there are equivalent words to N.
It is never acceptable to use the N word.

Damn I am ranting!

I better go kill some monsters and chill

lol, Turkey, I know one thing for fact. If you aren't black and you say it where I grew up, you didn't get to grow up. And Kung, I would like to know which server and name you play on CS:S, myself and a few others from joeys play it as well.

ahhh, someone finally had the balls to tackle an issue i myself had been having issues with seeing occurring on the server myself. i never said anything, i suppose, because people seem to have enough hostility towards me that i did not wish to breed any more in my direction. i guess it was cowardly on my part, but i guess i just tend to go the silent route when i play as much as possible because so many wish to always come back with what they think is some witty, ego-boosting retort and i don't really want to deal with any more hot-aired trash coming from anyone's maws.

yes, there is a lot of bigotry and insulting talk, be it a general commenting or directed to someone. there really should be some online with the "power" to be able to speak out whats right and know that undermining their declaration could have consequences. there is a freedom of speech, which many loved to bring up with paint's forum-rules post on cussing, but i believe there are some decencies that should be adhered to when it comes to issues that come closer to heart when considering real people and how the world is.

thank you for speaking out about this, kungfu.

Turkey,

I appreciate that the use of the N word is accepted by some in specific environments, my argument is that a UT server is not one of them. The players I have met here are diverse in terms or race and age. By accepting its use here we send an incorrect message that it is acceptable in other situations. The history of Black America and the historic use of the N word make it fundamentally wrong to use it regardless of race or location.
