ECC mem (Registered Memory) is only good for server use. Not gaming use. It doesn't have fast timings and if you look at all the high-end gaming PCs that are available from the top high-end manufacturers (Voodoo, Alienware, etc) they don't even consider using ECC mem in a gaming system.
Your absolutely right on a large ATX case or BTX case cause the air exchange is much better. CoolerMaster, Lian Li and Armor make some great ones with air exchange in mind. Fans blowing directly on the vid cards is the best way to go.
Server mobos are really not a good choice at the moment as there are mobos that can handle up to 8 gb of mem (which is more than enough for any high-end system) designed for gaming in mind. Also server mobos are a great deal more expensive than even the best gaming mobo. My EVGA 680i is one of those that can accept 8 gb of mem.
