Re: The Server Is Dead (But there is good news)
hi all, im going through withdrawals now, haha. just an opinion since I don't know a lot about renting servers but I have to agree with joey on owning the server. I have rented houses and I have owned houses, by far owning is the only way to go if your in it for the long haul. i would have to think all rentals and ownership of equipment would work just about the same. anyway, hope we all get to fragging soon whatever the outcome.

Re: The Server Is Dead (But there is good news)
Alright I just got off the phone with joeyz and he is open to going with gameservers.com as long as it will meet all of our needs. He agrees that it is much cheaper and far less of a hassle than owning our own box at a datacenter. I'm going to join some gameservers hosted UT2k4 servers and check out the performance and I'm going to call their sales people and ask some questions. Joey is going to do the same and we are going to compare notes later. If we decide to go with gameservers then we just have to download the files from the old server and upload them to gameservers and we should be back up and running in no time. The only thing that will suck is the IP will change and all of our gametracker stats will go away, but thats not a huge deal. I'll continue to keep you guys posted.

Re: The Server Is Dead (But there is good news)
looks like everything has its good and bad sides.
thinking about the IP, wasnt switching to another IP one reason for the death of the mm-battlefield-karkand server?
to bridge the time renting a gameserver is at least a fast option, time will tell if players "accept" it or not. maybe its
not necessary to look for an own server then. or its enough time to reach as many players as possible on that rented server
to tell them you are now able to switch back to old "wellknown" IP...
to make that happen you need a special key, not the cd-key, ut2k4-server-("cd")-key, for those
who dont know, you can get it here:
http://www.unrealtournament.com/ut2004server/cdkey.php
slowed down by (ab-)using it as downloadcenter. thats why the redirect-server-option exist. if that fails it automatically
switches to gameserver as a compromise solution so server isnt 100% dead, but ultra slow with your downloads to keep
gameplay at higher performance....
hrhrhr... and if players would have listen or read the server-messages they would have known of the existence of this forum to get more informations about this or that problem... guess we should BUMP every 6 year old last topic to make it look like

with "it" you mean "the" server appears by name and its infos in the ut-server-browser.Rumple wrote:Oh, one more word on keeping the old IP... If it shows-up on the "browse servers", I think that's all you need...

mapdownloads and modifications can be downloaded from gameserver, but i guess even with high end server and good connection it will allways be a dropdown since ut is a game that should be PLAYED on high performance, and not beeingRumple wrote:...and come play....maybe even at a MUCH higher rate than before if the map downloads are faster.

Re: The Server Is Dead (But there is good news)
After looking at renting a server, I'm still leaning towards owning our own being a better option. In fact, I already purchased a new server for $1800 and it is coming in the mail tomorrow. I just have to talk to joey and see what he wants to do. Owning our own server makes sense because will be hosting many servers. The data center pricing is more affordable as the amount of games you host increases.

Re: The Server Is Dead (But there is good news)
just a quick reply.. not much I can do, having issues with life
if you can at all ever avoid it, do not go with a slot server, the ones that I have played competition on are/where crap... because they where virtualized servers, VMware or oracle vm or hypervisor(ms) -- I have never seen a slot server be of any good value when it comes to gameplay, but I haven't played in competition in some time so it may have changed since then. The last time I managed servers is was in New York/Colorado/Texas .. I was more involved in a Linux box in Texas though had dom control of a windows box in Texas as well .. did some distro design for packaged mod at one point (infiltration 2.x) .. I have always found a baremetal system the most responsive, as they are tweekable to the NIC, also, if you are using a 100Mbit uplink, setting up loadbalancing for 4 2Mbit connections for 4 server instances with a side of 20Mbit-40Mbit for redirect on a separate IP or even the same IP as long as it's run through the loadbalancing appliance (though the loadbalancer, if softbased can be an issue itself) would still be preferable to a slotbased system to me... though that is just me... kind of getting a feeling that virtualization does have a place, but not with me and game servers, you got it! .. I don't.. not as yet. Anyway, just wanted to push my 2 cents on the table, not much else I can do but help with ideas.

Re: The Server Is Dead (But there is good news)
Alright Everyone here's an update!
Baron has decided to make an executive decision, and has concluded that renting is not the correct route for our community to go.
Yesterday the hardware arrived, and he spent the night assembling the new server. I'm and not 100% sure on the specs of it, so I'll leave that to him to post for those that are interested.
While assembling he unfortunately realized that Intel doesn't include CPU fans with their chipsets anymore or at least this particular model.
So he hopes to call today around town to see if any stores nearby sell CPU fans, If not then he will purchase one online and get free two day shipping.
We hope to get into contact with Joey by the end of the weekend at the latest to begin moving all of our files over to the new server. When that is completed we will prepare the server for shipping to the data center over in Chicago.
When it has left our hands, we will post another update and even some pictures of the new server. And hope to be playing not to much longer after that!
Thanks Everyone!

Re: The Server Is Dead (But there is good news)
I'm glad you guys are sorting things out.
Are you interested in using one of my servers as an 'interim' server just so you'll have a place to play until things are running again? I can convert my UT testing server to UT2K4 very easily (without losing anything) and GS allows physical relocation of the servers for free. It would give your guys a place to play and you won't be so 'under the gun' to get it done immediately. Use it till you don't need it any more and know that your server side files are secure. I've been in the UScene since it's start and I have access to a number of servers from freelancing support to guys who need it. In fact my email begins with "agut" and for the old farts you'll recognize alt.games.unrealtournament
If you are interested you can catch me in my teamspeak (site is in the sig) or PM me and I'll give you my cell. Small caveat you may need to know ahead of time though is that I'm coming off a nasty battle with Stg4 cancer. I'm fine but it left me with some facial disfigurement and I lost all my teeth. That makes my pronunciation a little labored at times (depending on the word) but on the whole I do fine. It's just sometimes I get a tiny bit slurred if I'm overly tired or sleepy.
